Unlocking sodium-ion’s transformative potential
PowerNaP Energy is the first and only company to engineer phosphorus as anode material for sodium-ion batteries.
Sodium sits just below lithium on the periodic table, so like lithium, only has one valence electron, which it readily gives up.
This, among other factors, make such elements (called alkali metals) well suited for storing charge. Unlike lithium, sodium is found in enormous quantities on Earth—it’s 1,000 times as abundant as lithium.
However, sodium is also more massive than lithium, meaning today’s sodium-ion batteries tend to be a good fit for lower energy density use cases like grid storage.
To truly take advantage of sodium’s potential, we need to push it to higher energy density. Phosphorus is transformative for sodium‑ion batteries, storing up to eight times more charge as conventional hard carbon anodes.
